The Possibilities of 53: Birthday Challenge 2013

“If you know you can do it, it’s not a challenge.”
Birthday Challenge mantra

I might be biting off more than I can chew but, in a way, that’s the point. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again. Announcing this year’s challenge:

From Oct 1 to Nov 22

A test on the recuperative powers of a middle ager by embarking in a 53-day challenge that’s highlighted by a major physiologic test every week for 8 continuous weeks, with 53 additional tasks to be done mid week.

Unlike some of my challenges, the goal of this one is physical improvement despite events that most experts would rationalize were impossible to recover from in the given time frame. They may be right, hence the lure.

The events will combine a broad spectrum, combing power, endurance, and skill. Data will be kept throughout, along with strict journaling and, perhaps, deeper analysis done by P3 if our schedules match up well enough to allow testing to happen. Otherwise, evidence will be empirical.

The Events:

5 big days

1 Lift 530,000lbs in a day – prospective date NOV 10

2 Ride the Kokopelli or White Rim Trail in a day – prospective date OCT 20

3 Climb 5 desert towers in 5 different areas on 3 different types of sandstone in a day – prospective date OCT 19

4 Santa Barbara 53 Link-up: 5 redpoints at the Owl Tor and the big 3 on a bike (Gibraltar, Old San Marcos, Refugio) in a weekend. – prospective date OCT 5 & 6
