Desert Solitaire

Desert Solitaire

Once again I lacked any takers for what promises to be a super fun weekend. My wife filled in for support, which all need, but as of now the adventure looks like a game of desert solitaire. Saturday I’ll try and ride the White Rim Trail in a day. I’ve done it before, so it should be alright, but you never really know. To add to the challenge I’ll try it in flats (not clipped in), which shouldn’t make a big difference. My feet often hurt on long rides so I’ve been trying to get used to riding like a did when I was a kid, without being clipped in, because I don’t remember my feet ever hurting. I did a lot of long rides back then but I don’t think I ever did 100 miles, so at least I have some sort of PR to look forward to. Here an excerpt from my last trip on the White Rim,

Doing it in a day is not requisite and, in fact, while a fairly-common tick for ultra geeks, is probably not the best way to do it. If I were going to pay a company to SAG for a long ride this might be the one. As Jeff said, “I can’t imagine there’s a better mountain bike tour in the world”.

“A desert tower is worth 10 walls.”

– Layton Kor

Day two features five desert towers. That’s, like, 50 walls in Kor-speak. Since my wife claims she doesn’t want to climb I had to find things that were one pitch-ish, to allow her to belay with minimal adventure (she might have some, it’s the desert after all). Digging around I came up with a passel that look just great. I’ll go for the most aesthetic link-up I can, depending on time/beat-up-from-the-day-before ness. First choice is to climb at five different areas because the Moab area sandstone varies so much. This, I think, would be the coolest option due to variety. Second, which will be trickier, is to climb one of each grade: 5.8, 5.9, 5.10, 5.11, 5.12. The last one clearly being the most problematic. Last time I tried to climb after a big day on the bike it didn’t go well at all. But, hey, it’s not birthday pretty hard….

For ideas on one-pitch towers spread out around Moab, here’s what my research uncovered. I’ve done a couple of these. My first choice will be to do ones that are virgin to me. Happy reading.

Beachbody Workout of the Day

Yoga Booty Ballet Pure & Simple Yoga – A Kundalina hybrid from Gillian and Teigh, this is a nice addition to anyone’s fitness collection.

Synopsis – Two short rides today to figure out which “1st” I’ll do this weekend, single speed on the White Rim on flat pedals. I think the latter. My feet bother me on long rides and I’ve been trying to improve with flats and could use a long test.

  • You should have that photo of me on top of Ancient Art holding up the Oly I dragged up there in my chalkbag.

  • Wait, what?! How have I not seen that photo?

    • I can’t believe that you’ve never seen that photo, but maybe?

  • Also, this one’s for you. Maybe you’ll join F/B and be with all the cool kids, like Stevie…

Stevie Haston hey Steve, I know you will be busy but could you do a certain crack for me, it must be around a mile from the photo to your right, good luck with your Moab time.

Steve Edwards No question about owning a mtb in Utah, that is for sure, though you could, if you were really into self-flagellation, ride the WRT on a civie.

Denis Faye Moab has been on my bucket list since I lived in Oz. Damnit, Edwards. You’re a horrible influence. I’m going to need a raise, stat.

Steve Edwards No, man. Moab is cheap! Oh, yeah, you need a bike, too. We’ll figure that one out.
