Hey Kids, Pump Some Iron

Hey Kids, Pump Some Iron

Whether or not it’s safe for kids to weight train has been like an unsolved mystery for as long as I’ve been alive. Despite an obesity epidemic and almost no logic support the rationale that it would be unsafe, the theory has persisted. I still see gyms that don’t allow kids under 16 to use weight. Well, finally, someone had the nerve to study the subject and, surprise, turns out weight training is as good for kids as it is for adults.

After a few months, kids who did squats, crunches and bench presses were stronger than their classmates. And boys who did strength training had upped their weekly exercise by 10 percent.

And, since you’re going to ask.

There were no injuries during the study period. Both boys and girls improved their leg and arm strength after 19 weeks of training compared to those who went to gym class.

“Teaching strength training and teaching it safely in a supervised setting is important and I think it absolutely should be incorporated into our regular physical education,” states Dr. Cordelia Carter in the article. She also said she thought is was a good idea to start kids stretngth training at home “if parents feel they can properly supervise their kids.”

In other words, as long as your train smart and use proper form, weight training is safe and effective for kids. The same caveat we use with adults.

Speaking of weight training, I have to life 530,000 pounds in one workout this weekend. That, perhaps, isn’t something you should have your kids do.

Beachbody Workout of the Day

Great Arms – Some people were doing the old Great Body Guaranteed workouts from the 90s yesterday in the gym at Beachbody. Had to follow their lead. Did another today, which is actually all upper body and not just arms, using isometrics!

Synopsis – Lots of work today. At least it was most stuff that counts. It just might be possible to tick of the entire list. Wow. Still some big stuff looming so I’ve got to stay focused.
